Fungal Infection

What causes fungal infection?

Fungal infection (“ring worm”) is a common infection in the tropics. There are different types of fungal infection but most of them favour areas of the body which  are moist and sweaty like the feet, toes, toenails, groins and buttocks. Some types of fungal infection could be transmitted through contact with animals or people. People with depressed immune response like diabetes can also have more recurrent or widespread fungal infections.

How to treat fungal infection?

Fungal infection may be treated with anti-fungal creams if it is not severe. If it does not respond to creams, oral medication with anti-fungal tablets may be required.  Nail fungal infection are more resistant and will usually require treatment with oral anti-fungal medication for at least 6 to 12 weeks.

Sometimes, your dermatologist may perform skin or nail tests to confirm the fungal infection before starting treatment.
