Hair Removal
Is laser hair removal permanent?
Hair can be removed in various ways. Some of the methods, such as shaving, plucking and waxing, only provide temporary results. Electrolysis, which involves using an electric needle inserted into the hair follicle to destroy the hair bulb, is painful and tedious and is associated with a risk of scarring. Laser hair removal has been found to offer the safest and most permanent solution for hair removal. The results depend on the type of hair present. Usually the coarser and darker hair (e.g. armpits, lower legs) will respond better to laser. In other areas where the hair is finer and lighter (e.g. facial hair), the response may be slower.
How is laser hair removal performed?
Two weeks before the treatment, waxing, epilation, plucking and bleaching is avoided. Sun tanning of the area is also discouraged. Just before the laser, anaesthetic cream (numbing cream) is applied for 30 minutes. During the laser, there is usually minimal discomfort. The time taken depends on the area of hair removed and usually ranges from 10 – 30 minutes. There is no special skin care required after the laser. At least 6 session are recommended and treatments are performed every 6 to 8 weeks.
